The Williamson Street Art Center conducts artist-in-residency programs and community art projects with schools, community centers, and other civic organizations . We specialize in large-scale mural projects and fabric/ found art 3-D figure workshops. We bring enthusiasm and a sense of inclusion to all participants.

“The History of Willy Street in the 70's - Changing the World through Art” mural was painted with community members and installed at the Social Justice Center, 1202 Williamson St, on the Few St side of the building in Madison,WI. 

You can listen to interviews of the artist, poets, musicians and activists who lived and worked in the Willy St area during the 1970’s when artists and activists tried to change the world. Archival art from 70's Willy St artists accompany their stories.

This project was funded through the MG&E Foundation, the Wisconsin Arts Board, the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, the Madison Arts Commission and various Willy St businesses and organizations.

2011 “The Journey of Our Food" Mural

This mural in Centro Hispano of Dane County's new kitchen is one of a series of murals at Centro Hispano in Madison, WI. It was painted by  West High School SAIL students, UW Educational Outreach Technology & Art students, and community members. It was funded by the Wisconsin Arts Baord and UW Educational Outreach.

2011 "My Beautiful Puerto Rico" Mural

This mural is one of a series of murals atCentro Hispano of Dane County in Madison, WI. It was painted byWest High School SAIL students and was funded by the Wisconsin Arts Board.

2010 "Heroes of the Hispanic World" Murals

These murals are part of the series of murals at Centro Hispano of Dane County in Madison, WI.
A panel of Latino members of the community chose heroes from the Hispanic world whose portraits inspire Latino youth. They were painted by Latino youth and community members. American Girl Fund for Children and the Wisconsin Arts Board funded the murals.

 

2009 "Foods of the Hispanic World" Mural  

This mural - in the series of murals at Centro Hispano of Dane County in Madison, WI  - covers all 4 walls of the kitchen. It was painted by high school students in the Work Experience Youth summer program and was funded by the American Girl Fund for Children.

 

2009 Family Resource Center "Apprendiendos Juntos" Mural

This mural - in the series of murals at Centro Hispano of Dane County in Madison, WI - is in the child care area of the Family Resource Center. It was painted by Latino youth and community members. It was funded by American Girl Fund for Children. 

2009 “Volcano Room” and "The Beach" Murals

These murals are part of the series of murals at Centro Hispano of Dane County in Madison, WI.
They were painted by middle school students in the UW Educational Outreach Technology & Art and College for Kids program and by community members. UW Educational Outreach and the American Girl Fund for Children funded these murals.

2009 “Mi Casa es Su Casa” Mural

This is the first mural in the series of murals at Centro Hispano of Dane County in Madison, WI. It is in the lobby. Students from UW Educational Outreach Technology & Art program, Latino youth and community members painted the mural. It was funded by UW Educational Outreach, the Wisconsin Arts Board and the American Girl Fund for Children.

2010-2011 Omega School Community Arts Project: Murals

Omega School is a high school equivelancy program in Madison, WI. The "Graduation Celebration" mural was painted by community members and funded by the Wisconsin Arts Board. Murals in the child care area and the kitchen were painted by middle school and high school students in the UW Educational Outreach programs and funded by UW Educational Outreach. 



 

2011 Freedom Elementary School Artist-in-Residency: Soft Sculptures, Found Art Sculptures & Murals

The Artist-in-Residency at Freedom Elementary School in Freedom, WI  included soft sculptures with K-2 students, found art sculptures with 3rd graders and 3 murals in the cafeteria with 4th & 5th graders - 730 students in all and was funded by the parent group.






2010-11 SOAR (School of Alternative Resources) Artist-in-Residency: "Community Theatre" Mural

The mural was painted with School of Alternative Resources  - alternative high school students and community members. It is located at the Sun Prairie Civic Theatre rehearsal barn in Sun Prairie, WI and covers 2 sides of the barn. It was funded by the Sun Prairie Youth and Family Commission, the United Way “By Youth for Youth”program and the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission.

2010 Respite Center Community Arts Project:
"Good People" Badges at the Overture International Festival

This project was designed to further the mission of the Respite Center - a crisis center for kids in Madison, WI. It was conducted at the Overture Center for the Arts by volunteers and was funded by the Respite Center.

 

2007-09 SOAR (School of Alternative Resources) Artist-in-Residency: Mural  

This mural was painted by School of Alternative Resources  - alternative high school students -  and community members. It is located atAngell Fireman's Park in Sun Prairie, WI (home of the Sun Prairie Corn Festival) and covers all 4 sides of the building. It was funded by the Sun Prairie Youth & Family Commission and the United Way “By Youth for Youth” program.

2009 Respite Center "African Rag Dolls" Community Art Project

This project was designed to further the mission of the Respite Center - a crisis center for kids in Madison, WI. It was conducted at the Overture Center for the Arts during the International Festival. Volunteers helped children and famiies make soft sculptures. The project was funded by the Respite Center.

 

2009 Eagle School Artist-in-Residency: Soft Sculpture Figures

 A parent funded this residency for 2 classes at Eagle School in Madison, WI.

2008 Prairie View Middle School Artist-in-Residency: Mural

"Welcome" mural was painted by Prairie View Middle School -  English as a Second Language students in Sun Prairie, WI. The ESLteacher funded it through a grant from the United Way “By Youth for Youth” program.


2008 Tomahawk Elementary School Artist-in-Residency: Mural

"Conservation" mural was painted byTomahawk Elementary School students, parents and teachers in Tomahawk, WI and was funded by the parent teacher group.


2006 Lakeview Elementary School Artist-in-Residency Murals

"Our Community" is a series of murals painted by Lakeview Elementary School students and community members in Madison, WI and was funded by the Wisconsin Arts Board.


 

2005 Madison Sesquicentennial Fabrications “Celebrating Madison’s 125 Years - in Cloth” Community Art Project

“Sesquicentennially stitched, we are all in the mix. She has hitched our remnants to a hopeful star.”

Nine 6’x6’ fabric collages made from artifacts collected from more than 130 individual, families and groups, were sewn together at community sewing bees. The Wisconsin Arts Board, Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission and Madison Citiarts funded the project.


2003-4 Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center Community Art Project: Mural

“Celebrating the Heart of a Neighborhood” commemorates Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center's 30th anniversary. It was funded by the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission.





2001–02 Lowell Elementary School Artist-in Residency: Murals

"Pathways of Connection" is a series of murals painted by students and parents at Lowell Elementary School in Madison, WI.  Funding was provided by the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission.


1993 Madison Ice Arena Community Art Project: Mural

"The History of Skating" is a mural covering all 4 walls of the studio rink at the Madison Ice Arena. It was painted by a combination of work-experience youth and figure skaters. It was funded by the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission and Madison Citiart.

“Sharon’s dedication to this project has provided the city of Madison with a historical perspective of local skaters in an ice arena setting. The final product has been extremely well received by everyone who has seen it, and many are genuinely awe-struck. It is simply that good.”

"We Are All Family" is a series of murals painted by Marquette Elementary School students in Madison, WI. It was funded by the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission.
